I’m watching this on Netflix currently and it’s by far one of the most bizarre films I’ve ever seen. Macabre, twisted, demented, and hysterical; albeit mediocrely executed.
This is wrong. Not being gay, for those who don’t know me, I have several gay friends and I love gay people. This comparison, however, I don’t like one bit.
Heterosexuality most certainly is normal. The dictionary definition of normal even cites “conforming to the common type” as part of its meaning. Thus, even if the distinction made here was in good taste, which it most certainly isn’t, it wouldn’t be valid. The definition even goes further to cite “natural” as one of the descriptors of the adjective. If something is merely common and not normal, that would imply it is unnatural. If heterosexuality wasn’t normal, the person who made this poster wouldn’t have been born.
Moreover, looking at it with a blatant interpretation of the words, one of the messages it conveys is “Heterosexuality is not normal, it’s just common.” Now to rephrase the first half of this clause without altering the message one bit, “Heterosexuality is abnormal…” which simply put, means to “deviate from the typical.” That just isn’t true. It obviously isn’t what the creator of the poster meant, but it is what he or she wrote.
Sure, there’s emphasis to be made, and an added clarification to water down the tone, and this poster was made for empowerment, not to take shots at straight people. But your approach is easily misconstrued, just look at what I did to it. You cannot empower your people by being an in-the-closet supremacist, who usurps pity as power through propaganda. That, will get you euthanized.
